Bebe’s Journey with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)

Case Study

From Paralysis to Confident Steps Through Rehabilitation

Diagnosis:  Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) – L3–L4

Services:  Hydrotherapy, Acupuncture, Laser Therapy, Shockwave Therapy,

Therapeutic Gym, Neuromuscular Rehabilitation

The Initial Problem

In November 2024, Bebe suffered a serious spinal injury after suddenly experiencing pain and difficulty walking. A neurological exam confirmed Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) affecting the lower back (L3–L4), a condition where degenerated spinal discs compress the spinal cord and nerves, leading to pain, weakness, and in severe cases, paralysis.

Bebe underwent spinal surgery on November 15, 2024 to relieve pressure on her spinal cord. Following surgery, she was paralyzed in her hind limbs, unable to stand, walk, or feel her back legs, and had lost voluntary bladder control.

Initial Rehabilitation Evaluation (December 9, 2024)

At her first rehabilitation exam at Animals Only, Bebe presented with:

  • Inability to stand or walk without full support

  • Minimal tail movement and weak neurological response in the hind limbs

  • Moderate muscle loss in her back and rear legs

  • Pain and trigger points along the spine and shoulders

  • Absent or delayed reflexes in the hind legs

  • Severe hind limb weakness

Her condition required an intensive, multi-modal rehabilitation approach.

Treatment Plan

Bebe’s customized recovery program included:

  • Hydrotherapy (Underwater Treadmill): To reduce joint pressure, retrain walking patterns, build strength, and restore neurological coordination.

  • Acupuncture: To stimulate nerve pathways, reduce inflammation, manage pain, and promote neurological recovery.

  • Laser Therapy: To enhance tissue healing, reduce pain, and improve circulation.

  • Shockwave Therapy: To address muscle tension, improve blood flow, and stimulate healing in affected tissues.

  • Therapeutic Gym Exercises: To rebuild strength, balance, coordination, and functional movement.

Rehabilitation Goals

  1. Improve neurological function

  2. Restore the ability to walk

  3. Improve balance and coordination

  4. Strengthen hind limbs

  5. Rebuild muscle mass and endurance
