SELF-CARE FOR YOUR BEST FRIEND

When it comes to caring for our pets, we’re always looking for ways to help them live happier, healthier lives. One incredibly effective yet often overlooked tool is manual therapy, also known as therapeutic massage for pets. And no, it’s not just a “spa day” for your furry friend. Manual therapy offers real, science-backed benefits for mobility, comfort, and overall well-being.
At Animals Only, a core part of our integrative care philosophy is the belief that every pet deserves support that treats their whole body, not just their symptoms. Pet massage, also known as manual therapy, plays a powerful role in that approach. When combined with complementary therapies like acupuncture, hydrotherapy, laser therapy, or therapeutic exercises, manual therapy helps create a well-rounded path to healing.
This hands-on work helps reduce tension, improve circulation, and support healthy mobility, all while enhancing the body’s natural ability to heal. With treatment plans tailored to each pet’s unique needs, our team ensures every session nurtures long-term comfort, balance, and overall well-being—helping your pet feel better in the moment and thrive far beyond it.
🌟What Is Manual Therapy?
Manual therapy is more than hands-on care—it’s a focused way to reduce tension, improve circulation, and support healthy movement. We blend myofascial release, targeted stretching, and joint mobilization techniques to help pets feel and move better. When needed, kinesiology tape is applied to provide ongoing support to muscles and joints between sessions.
Think of it like structured TLC with therapeutic purpose.
🫶 How Manual Therapy Helps Pets
Relieves Muscle Tension and Discomfort
Just like humans, pets experience muscle tightness from play, aging, or compensating for an injury. Manual therapy gently releases knots and adhesions in the tissues, easing discomfort and helping pets relax deeply. If your dog melts into the floor mid-session—it’s working.
Improves Circulation
Therapeutic massage stimulates blood flow, which helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues while removing waste products. Better circulation means faster recovery, reduced inflammation, and improved overall vitality.
Enhances Mobility and Flexibility
Tight muscles and stiff joints can limit a pet’s movement. Through stretching and joint mobilization, manual therapy promotes a fuller range of motion, making everyday activities like walking, jumping, and playing more comfortable.
Supports Aging Pets
Senior pets often deal with arthritis, stiffness, or decreased muscle tone. Manual therapy helps maintain mobility, reduce pain, and slow the progression of age-related changes. It’s like giving their bodies a gentle reminder of how good movement can still feel.
Aids Recovery After Injury or Surgery
Post-injury or post-operative pets often develop compensations or tightness that make healing harder. Manual therapy encourages proper movement patterns, improves tissue recovery, and complements veterinary rehabilitation plans.
Reduces Stress and Anxiety
Massage activates the parasympathetic nervous system—the “rest and digest” response. Pets often become calmer, breathe deeper, and show noticeable relaxation during and after sessions. Even the most high-energy pups can turn zmassageen master with the right massage techniques.
Provides Support Between Sessions with Kinesiology Tape
When needed, kinesiology tape is used to give muscles and joints extra support between treatments. It can help improve posture, reduce swelling, and gently guide movement patterns, extending the benefits of the session into everyday life.
⚡Signs Your Pet May Benefit from Manual Therapy
You might notice your pet:
Has trouble getting up or laying down
Seems stiff
in the morning, after long naps, or after exerciseHesitates to jump into the car or onto furniture

These are all indicators that manual therapy could help.
🔦Pet Patient Spotlight: Meet TimTam
Meet Tim Tam, a sweet, determined pup who’s putting in the work after his recent hip surgery. As part of his recovery plan, Tim Tam receives manual therapy, a combination of therapeutic massage, targeted stretching, and gentle joint mobilizations designed to help him regain comfort and mobility.
Because Tim Tam has been putting extra weight on his front leg to protect his healing hip, he’s developed a few tight spots and knots in those front-leg muscles. During his sessions, we focus on:
Massage and stretching for his front leg to loosen tense muscles caused by increased weight bearing
Myofascial release to reduce discomfort and restore balanced movement
This helps ease the strain on his front end so he can move more comfortably and evenly as he recovers. We also spend time massaging his hip flexors, which can tighten up post-surgery. By relaxing these muscles, we allow Tim Tam to achieve better hip extension and to regain full range of motion of his hip after surgery.
When the hip flexors relax, the opposing muscles (the ones responsible for extending the hip) can work more freely. This creates a smoother, safer range of motion and supports healthier walking patterns during rehab.
Through consistent manual therapy, Tim Tam is gaining mobility, easing tension, and building confidence in his recovering leg. His sessions help reduce compensations, restore proper movement, and support his body’s natural healing—one massage at a time.
We’re proud of this little champion and can’t wait to see him continue to thrive as he progresses through his rehabilitation journey.
