SELF-CARE FOR YOUR BEST FRIEND

When a pet begins rehabilitation, the journey is about so much more than healing an injury or recovering from surgery. It's about helping them regain confidence, rebuild strength, and return to the activities they love—whether that's chasing a favorite toy, climbing onto the couch for cuddles, or greeting their family at the door with a wagging tail.
While advanced therapies and personalized treatment plans are essential, one important part of the healing process is often overlooked: the environment itself.
At Animals Only, healing begins the moment you walk through the front door. Every space in the clinic has been thoughtfully designed to create a calm, welcoming atmosphere where pets feel safe, comfortable, and supported throughout every stage of their rehabilitation journey.
As a family-owned and operated practice, Animals Only was founded on the belief that exceptional veterinary care should nurture both physical recovery and emotional well-being. When pets feel less anxious and more relaxed, they're better able to engage in therapy, build trust with their rehabilitation team, and make steady progress toward recovery.
You'll often hear the phrase "Movement is Medicine." It's more than a tagline—it's the philosophy that guides every rehabilitation plan. Purposeful movement helps restore strength, improve mobility, reduce pain, and rebuild confidence. Whether it's a few careful steps after surgery or returning to long walks at the park, every movement is another step toward healing.
Another phrase you'll see throughout the clinic is "Self-Care for Your Best Friend." Just as people benefit from physical therapy, massage, and wellness care, pets deserve the same thoughtful approach to maintaining their health and quality of life. Rehabilitation isn't simply about recovering from an injury—it's about helping pets feel their best at every stage of life.
A Thoughtfully Designed Space for Healing
Co-owner and Clinic Manager Todd Oakley led the design and construction of Animals Only with one clear vision: to create a veterinary rehabilitation center that feels more like a peaceful wellness space than a traditional clinic.
Drawing on more than 15 years of experience in construction and design across New Zealand, Australia, and the United States, Todd carefully incorporated natural elements, open spaces, and thoughtful layouts that help reduce stress for both pets and their people.
Every detail—from the flow between treatment areas to the materials and finishes—was chosen with comfort, accessibility, and healing in mind. The result is an environment that encourages pets to relax, explore, and feel at ease during each visit.
Because rehabilitation isn't just a single appointment—it's a journey. Many people are surprised to learn that rehabilitation isn't only for pets recovering from surgery. Dogs and cats can benefit from rehabilitation for a wide variety of conditions, including orthopedic injuries, arthritis, hip dysplasia, cruciate ligament tears, fractures, neurological disorders, spinal injuries, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), muscle strains, sports injuries, obesity, age-related mobility changes, and chronic pain.
Rehabilitation is also an excellent option for senior pets who may simply be slowing down. A personalized rehabilitation program can help improve strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance, allowing pets to remain comfortable, active, and independent for as long as possible.
Many patients visit weekly or even multiple times each week, and creating positive experiences along the way helps build confidence and trust, making each visit something pets can look forward to.
A Warm Welcome from the Moment You Arrive
For many pets, simply walking into a veterinary clinic can bring back memories of uncomfortable exams or stressful procedures. That's why first impressions matter.
The reception area at Animals Only was intentionally designed to feel open, inviting, and peaceful. Comfortable seating, a welcoming atmosphere, and a calm environment help both pets and their owners settle in before appointments.

One unique feature is the firm, padded walkway located near reception. As patients walk into the clinic, the rehabilitation team can immediately observe their gait, posture, balance, and weight-bearing. These first few steps often provide valuable insight into how a patient is progressing and help guide each day's treatment.
Located nearby is a weighing scale, making it easy to monitor each patient's weight throughout their rehabilitation program. Maintaining a healthy weight is an important part of recovery, particularly for pets recovering from orthopedic injuries or living with arthritis, since reducing excess weight can significantly decrease stress on healing joints.
The reception area is also where one of Animals Only's favorite traditions takes place—the Rehabilitation Graduation Photo. After completing their rehabilitation program, graduates celebrate with a photo wearing their Animals Only bandana, to recognize how far they've come. Whether they overcame surgery, regained mobility, or learned to walk comfortably again, every graduation is a reminder that patience, teamwork, and compassionate care can make an incredible difference.
Over time, something remarkable happens. Pets who once entered cautiously often begin walking through the doors with confidence, recognizing familiar faces, routines, and positive experiences. Instead of associating veterinary visits with fear, they begin connecting them with encouragement, praise, and progress. That trust becomes an important part of the healing process.
A Quiet Space for Acupuncture and Relaxation
Healing often happens best when the body is relaxed. The dedicated acupuncture treatment room offers a peaceful setting where pets can unwind without unnecessary distractions. Soft lighting, quiet surroundings, and gentle handling help patients settle comfortably during their treatments. Many pets become so relaxed during acupuncture sessions that they rest peacefully—or even drift off to sleep.
Acupuncture can help support pets recovering from orthopedic injuries, neurological conditions, chronic pain, arthritis, and post-surgical healing. By stimulating the body's natural healing processes, it can reduce pain, improve circulation, and promote overall wellness.
Combined with a calm environment, acupuncture supports both physical recovery and emotional comfort, allowing pets to fully benefit from this gentle, integrative therapy.
A Fitness Gym Built Around Every Patient's Goals
One of the most common issues we see is the connection between excess weight and arthritis. When joints become painful, pets often move less. Reduced activity can lead to further weight gain, which then places even more stress on the joints. This creates a difficult cycle that can be challenging to break without intervention. Every one pound over ideal weights put approximately four pounds of shear force on the joints - so extra pounds have an exponential impact on the joints.
The good news is that even modest weight loss can significantly improve comfort and mobility. Studies have shown that overweight dogs with arthritis often experience measurable improvements in activity levels and pain reduction after losing excess weight.
Advanced Laser Therapy in a Comfortable Setting
Laser therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that helps reduce inflammation, relieve pain, improve circulation, and stimulate the body's natural healing process.
At Animals Only, laser therapy is performed in a quiet, comfortable environment where pets can remain calm throughout their session. By minimizing stress and creating a peaceful experience, patients are able to relax while receiving treatment.
Laser therapy is commonly used for arthritis, tendon and ligament injuries, post-surgical healing, wound care, and chronic pain management. Many patients experience increased comfort and improved mobility as part of their comprehensive rehabilitation program.
For many pets, these sessions become a soothing part of their routine, helping them feel more comfortable as they continue making progress toward recovery.
Hydrotherapy That Builds Strength—and Confidence
Hydrotherapy is one of the most effective tools in veterinary rehabilitation because it allows pets to strengthen muscles and improve mobility while placing significantly less stress on painful joints and healing tissues.
For some pets, stepping into the water for the first time can feel unfamiliar. That's why every hydrotherapy session at Animals Only is designed to be safe, positive, and encouraging. The rehabilitation team introduces each patient to the underwater treadmill at their own pace, using patience, gentle encouragement, and positive reinforcement throughout every session. For patients who need a little extra support, pool noodles and flotation aids can be used to help improve stability and build confidence while they learn to move comfortably in the water.

Many pets are also motivated with lick mats spread with their favorite treats, helping create positive associations with hydrotherapy while keeping them calm, focused, and engaged throughout treatment. What starts as an unfamiliar experience often becomes something they genuinely enjoy.
As strength improves, therapists carefully adjust the water level, treadmill speed, and exercise intensity to match each patient's progress and rehabilitation goals. The buoyancy of the water reduces stress on joints while allowing patients to rebuild muscle, improve endurance, increase joint range of motion, and restore a more natural gait.
Families often notice meaningful improvements outside the clinic as well—from longer walks and easier movement to renewed confidence climbing stairs, jumping into the car, or simply enjoying everyday activities again. For many patients, hydrotherapy becomes one of the most rewarding parts of their rehabilitation journey.
Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services
Hydrotherapy is just one part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program. Depending on each patient's condition and goals, the rehabilitation team may recommend a combination of therapies designed to support healing, manage pain, and improve overall function.
Shockwave Therapy uses acoustic waves to stimulate the body's natural healing response, making it an effective treatment for chronic tendon and ligament injuries, arthritis, and other musculoskeletal conditions.
Massage Therapy helps reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, increase flexibility, and promote relaxation. It can also relieve soreness after exercise or surgery while helping pets feel more comfortable throughout their recovery.
For pets carrying extra weight, Weight Management Programs provide individualized nutrition and exercise plans that help reduce stress on joints while improving overall health. Even modest weight loss can significantly improve mobility, decrease pain, and enhance quality of life for pets with arthritis or orthopedic conditions.
By combining advanced therapies with personalized treatment plans, Animals Only helps each patient receive the care that's best suited to their individual needs and rehabilitation goals.
More Than a Clinic—A Place Where Healing Happens Together
Animals Only was founded by Dr. Elizabeth Schuda, whose extensive training in integrative rehabilitation, physical medicine, acupuncture, and photomedicine reflects her passion for advancing veterinary care and improving the patient experience. Together, Elizabeth and Todd envisioned something bigger than a rehabilitation clinic.

They wanted to create a place where pets feel safe, families feel supported, and healing happens through compassion, expertise, and genuine connection.
Every room, treatment area, and thoughtful design choice reflects that shared commitment.
The rehabilitation team celebrates every milestone, whether it's a pet taking its first comfortable steps after surgery, regaining the confidence to walk without assistance, or simply enjoying life with less pain. These moments are shared victories between pets, their families, and the team that has supported them every step of the way.
Whether a pet is recovering from surgery, learning to walk again after a neurological injury, managing arthritis, improving athletic performance, or simply staying active as they age, rehabilitation provides the tools they need to move more comfortably and confidently. At Animals Only, they believe that Movement is Medicine—and that every pet deserves the opportunity to enjoy a happier, healthier, and more active life.
Healing Happens Best When Pets Feel Safe
Rehabilitation is rarely a straight line. Some days bring exciting breakthroughs, while others require patience, consistency, and encouragement. Throughout that journey, having a calm, supportive environment helps pets feel secure enough to keep moving forward.
At Animals Only, rehabilitation is about treating the whole patient—not just the injury. Through advanced therapies, individualized treatment plans, thoughtful design, and compassionate care, every patient is given the opportunity to heal physically while rebuilding confidence along the way.

Because every stronger step, every easier stretch, every successful swim, every graduation photo, and every joyful tail wag tells the story of a pet getting back to what matters most—living a happy, active life with the people who love them.
At Animals Only, that's what healing is all about.
