Ringo, A Senior Dog with a Fighter's Spirit

Case Study

How a dedicated rehabilitation program — and an even more dedicated dog mom — helped a 14-year-old boy rediscover his joy at the park.

Diagnosis:  Decreasing comfort and mobility, with shorter walks and difficulty on stairs. On examination, Ringo showed a mild limp in the right back leg, avoiding weight-bearing on that leg when sitting, standing, or rising. His back legs fatigued quickly and there was visible muscle loss in the thighs. He had mild pain in the mid-back and moderate pain in the lower back, arthritis with stiffness and crunching in both knees and ankles, and was mildly overweight at 82.9 lbs.

Services:  Laser, shockwave, hydrotherapy, gym sessions

The Initial Problem

When Ringo first walked through the doors at Animals Only, he was a 14-year-old dog carrying more than just years — he was carrying real pain. Diagnosed with osteoarthritis and progressive hindlimb weakness, Ringo's days had grown shorter: shorter walks, shorter bursts of energy, and a growing reluctance to use his right back leg.

But what Ringo had in abundance was something no diagnosis could diminish: a will to move, and a mom whose commitment to his wellbeing made all the difference.

Symptoms

Ringo presented with many of the hallmark signs of canine osteoarthritis.

  • Difficulty getting up & down

  • Decreased exercise tolerance

  • Limping / gait changes

  • Pain & soreness

  • Muscle wasting

  • Stiffness after resting

  • Changes in behavior

Assessment

Key Findings

  • Decreasing comfort and mobility

  • Shorter walks

  •  Difficulty on stairs

Movement & Strength

  • Mild limp in right back leg

  • Avoids putting weight on that leg when sitting, standing, or getting up

  • Back legs fatigue quickly when standing and walking

  • Muscle loss in the thighs

Pain & Joints

  • Mild pain in mid-back, moderate pain in lower back

  • Arthritis in both knees and ankles (stiffness and crunching)

  • Mildly overweight

Recommendation & Rehabilitation Goals

A structured rehabilitation program to improve comfort and mobility and for weight loss.

  • Pain/ Inflammation control  for the hips, knees, ankles

  • Muscle strengthening  in the hind legs

  • Improve stamina and mobility

  • Weight loss

Treatment

A conservative management which included:

  • Laser Therapy: Targets bone, cartilage, muscle, tendons, ligaments, and joints to decrease inflammation, reduce pain, and accelerate healing at the cellular level.

  • Shockwave Therapy: Manages pain and improves healing in muscles, joints, tendons, and bone — particularly effective for osteoarthritis and soft tissue issues like Ringo's.

  • Hydrotherapy:  Our underwater treadmill supports the body by reducing joint pressure while building strength, movement, and confidence — ideal for senior dogs with arthritis.

  • Gym-based Therapy: Targeted exercises to improve mobility, balance, strength, coordination, and endurance — with positive reinforcement to keep Ringo engaged and motivated.

    • Low-impact exercises

    • Use of non-slip rugs/ ramps

  • Weight Management: Shed excess weight

  • Joints supplements / joint injections

    • NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug)

    • DMOAD (disease-modifying osteoarthritis drug eg. Adequan)

Recovery Timeline & Progress

Recovery is rarely a straight line — and Ringo's story reflects the honest reality of rehabilitation for a senior dog with multi-joint arthritis. There were breakthroughs, a setback, and ultimately, a beautiful comeback.

Phase 1: Rehab Begins

  • July 2025

Mild right hind limp, reduced weight-bearing, hind leg weakness and fatigue, thigh muscle loss, arthritis in knees and ankles, mild–moderate back pain, slightly overweight. Structured rehabilitation started.

Phase 2: Encouraging Progress

  • August 26, 2025

Improved strength — Ringo is standing evenly, no longer favoring the right hind leg, and showing decreased back pain. At home, his owner reports he's walking longer distances and even galloping at his favorite park.

Phase 3: A Difficult Stretch

  • Mid - October 2025
  • Setback

Reduced mobility, falling and leaning to the left, circling, and muscle loss from a period of inactivity. The team adjusted the plan and rallied around Ringo and his family.

Phase 4: Back on Track

  • October 29, 2025
  • Recovery

No limping. Improved balance and weight-bearing. Hind leg stiffness remains but is manageable. Moderate back pain. Neurological exam: normal.

Phase 5: Holding Strong

  • December 22, 2025
  • Stable Progress

No limping, improved strength and coordination, mild stiffness, ongoing but stable back discomfort, no balance issues. A dog steadily moving in the right direction.

Phase 6: Alert, Mobile & Thriving

  • December 30, 2025
  • Current Status

Alert and mobile, well-balanced, very subtle right hind limp, mild knee swelling, hind leg stiffness. Back pain fully resolved. Neurological exam: normal.

What Ringo's Mom Observed

Rehabilitation doesn't happen only in the clinic — it happens between sessions, at home, and out in the world. Ringo's mom has been his most important partner throughout this journey.

"After the first recheck in August, Ringo showed improved ability for daily activities — no more crouching, seeming more sturdy and stable, able to walk farther during his daily outings. At his favorite place to be, the park, Ringo is galloping again.”

There were harder moments too. In October, the family noticed a decline — Ringo began falling and circling — which prompted the care team to reassess and adapt. By the fourth follow-up in December, Ringo had regained strength with no more arthritis flare-ups or falling episodes.

A Message from Animals Only

Animals Only would like to thank Ringo's mom whose dedication and commitment made Ringo's recovery possible.  Ringo’s story is a reminder that progress, no matter how big or small, is a joy for our best friends and worth celebrating.

Progress Worth Celebrating

Ringo's progress is a journey — and not one that is always predictable or linear. With multi-joint arthritis, there was a time when pain ruled his day, mobility was limited, stamina was low, and even short walks were a struggle.

Today, things look brighter. He's walking with more ease and enjoying his days with far less pain. He even gallops at his favorite park. As a 14-year-old, Ringo works hard to retain his strength — and every session, every walk, every wag of his tail is proof that it's worth it.
